Your rights
Volunteers give time freely — but not without protections. This page summarises common rights for unpaid volunteers in New Zealand and where to get help.
Core expectations
Across New Zealand, volunteers should expect:
- Not to replace a paid worker's role without a legitimate volunteering arrangement.
- Reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses incurred for the organisation.
- Enough training and induction to do the role safely.
- A healthy and safe work environment — including volunteers under health and safety law.
- Protection of your private information.
- Freedom from unlawful discrimination and harassment.
If something goes wrong
Start with the organisation's internal process. Document what happened and when. You can seek advice from Citizens Advice Bureau, Community Law centres or a trusted support person. For safety issues contact WorkSafe; for discrimination the Human Rights Commission may apply — volunteers are covered under employment-related definitions in the Human Rights Act.
On this network
Each opportunity is hosted by the publishing organisation — not by OSVector. Your sign-up details go to that host for coordination. If a listing looks incorrect or unsafe, contact the organisation first; platform admins can suspend abusive hubs.

Common questions
- Are volunteers covered by health and safety law?
- Yes — organisations must manage volunteer safety as part of their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
- Should I be paid?
- Volunteer roles are unpaid by definition, but expenses should be reimbursed and roles should not unlawfully displace paid staff.
- Can I leave a roster?
- Yes. Let the coordinator know — roster systems on this network expect honest yes/no responses.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. Consult Community Law or CAB for your situation.
