About

African Biodiversity Research Expeditions (Pty) Ltd (ABRE), a subsidiary of African Ecological Conservation Projects, provides practical fieldwork and conservation experiences within African protected areas to paying volunteers and student groups to fund ecological and conservation infrastructure and assessments. ABRE will be conducting several structured herpetological field projects in South Africa during the 2025/2026 austral summer which allow for volunteer participation. These projects offer practical hands-on field work opportunities under the guidance of ABRE staff for students, wildlife enthusiasts, and early career natural scientists, ecologist, herpetologists, conservationists, or biologist who would like to attain experience conducting biodiversity assessments in the field. These projects are not “herp tours” but centre around structured assessments such as pitfall and funnel trap arrays and spot-light counts, the data from which are submitted and remain the property of the conservation authorities managing the protected areas on which surveys or assessments are conducted. While these projects focus on reptiles and amphibians, a wide variety of wildlife are encountered during field activities. In areas where encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife are prevalent, armed rangers will accompany ABRE staff and volunteers.
